(Cape Town) – Youth Day on June 16 will be celebrated in Cape Town with a performance of special significance, featuring musical reflections on the youth of 1976.
The Soweto uprisings are regarded as one of the most important turning points in South Africa’s history, setting in motion a series of events that would bring forth the emergence of a new, democratic South Africa.
Marking the 40-year commemoration of the Soweto uprisings, the show will be directed by Mandla Mbothwe, who manages a star-studded cast, which includes: Thembi Mtshali-Jones, Bo Petersen and Celeste Matthews-Wannenburgh.
In addition, there will be segments from post 1994 young blood poets Koleka Putuma, Siphokazi Jonas and Janine Van Rooy-Overmeyer.
The production will also feature the well-known Mandla Mlangeni who will be providing a musical narrative journey of the piece. His band includes the legendary Dizo Plaatjies, Lesego Rampolokeng, Brydon Bolton, Mark Fransman and many more.
