Swartkop Air Force appoints female commanding officer

(Centurion) – The Air Force Base (AFB) in Swartkop, Centurion, is to get its first woman commanding officer. Colonel Johanna Schoeman will take up her position on Friday.

“The SA Air Force will bestow the leadership of its base to a first female commander since the two epochs,” said AFB spokesperson Captain Ntokozo Ntshangase.

Ntshangase said the AFB would officially salute Schoeman in a traditional military change of command parade to be held at the AFB Swartkop.

Schoeman will take over from Brigadier- General Jacobus Crous.

AFB Swartkop will also witness a change of command involving a second woman.

Lieutenant-Colonel Bianca van Vollenstee will take over the reigns as officer commanding 17 Squadron from Lt-Col Isaac Moreetsi.

The protection arm of the Base, 500 Squadron, will also welcome Lt-Col Rapule Boshomane as the new officer commanding.

And, after leading the SAAF Museum into the best SAAF Training Unit for the year 2016, Lt-Col Thor Fredericks will hand over the reigns to the new officer commanding of the unit, Major Gavin Bruintjies.
