Umlazi community show their spirit of Ubuntu in the wake of recent floods

Durban floods
Umlazi community joined forces to aid flood victims in their time of need.

At least 124 houses were destroyed and more than 14 people died in Umlazi alone when heavy downpours and floods hit low-lying areas of Durban.

The Umlazi Mega City initiative was set up by the centre management team who then called on tenants, customers as well as the broader society to contribute towards relief efforts for displaced people and communities in this hard-hit area.

On Friday, May 3rd a vast number of items such as clothes, blankets and non-perishables were handed over to local residents at the local Community Centre in Q-Section. Through these efforts, the centre managed to donate R20 000 in supplies to the worst affected.

General Manager of Umlazi Mega City, Siphumelele Khuzwayo, stated, “We were so pleased to play a part by rallying our shoppers and tenants to help our community members who were desperate and in need, after losing much of all they own after this devastating disaster. We would seriously like to thank all involved in making a difference and giving hope to both individuals and community alike.”

If any businesses or individuals still wish to contribute, they can do so by visiting the information desk at Umlazi Mega City or further enquiries please contact Zinhle Zungu on 031 902 8202.
