Heartfelt reactions to Miss SA being crowned Miss Universe

Sunday 8 December saw the crowning of the 68th Miss Universe and the winner, who hails from the Eastern Cape, has social media users in awe.

After wowing the judges and fans throughout the competition, Miss South Africa Zozibini Tunzi managed to swoop the title – and even Oprah has congratulated her.

Many on social media are in awe of Tunzi’s powerful words at the pageant (about being a natural-haired role model to young girls across the world).

Tunzi was born in Tsolo, Eastern Cape, and raised in the nearby village of Sidwadweni. She moved to Cape Town and began her pageantry career in 2017.

I think the most important thing we should be teaching young girls today is leadership. It’s something that has been lacking in young girls and women for a very long time – not because we don’t want to, but because of what society has labelled women to be.

“I think we are the most powerful beings on the world, and that we should be given every opportunity, and that is what we should be teaching these young girls – to take up space. Nothing is as important as taking up space in society and cementing yourself,” Tunzi said.

As Miss Universe, some of her benefits include a year-long salary believed to be about $100,000 (or R1,475-million), a luxury apartment in New York City, a modelling portfolio by some of the best fashion photographers and other benefits like free dental services, skincare consultations and the services of professional nutritionists.

Her Miss Universe crown also comes with personal styling by the official Miss Universe Organization fashion stylist, reports Sowetanlive.

Tunzi will reside in New York City with Miss USA 2019 and will take part in a number of events and appearances throughout the world.
