The average coffee-lover will spend R25 for a “flat white” each morning, easily raking up a bill of R525 in 21 days. Friends Kelly Rother, Jess Ronaasen and Rozanne Strydom did the math and created the Coffee Colab to do good and give back during the national lockdown.
“As a generation of coffee lovers, a huge portion of our budgets goes toward our daily morning coffee. How about we collaborate during the nationwide lockdown and direct the funds we would be spending each morning on our morning coffees toward causes that are doing amazing work in South Africa?” the Coffee Collab writes on its crowdfunding page.
The group has already raised over R28,000.
The funds raised by the Coffee Collab initiative will be donated to a charity nominated by their supporters.
“This will allow different organisations with various needs to benefit at different times, whether they be health, social services, or food and essentials.”
Many South Africans are unable to work, gain access to basic supplies or access essential services during the lockdown. And even if they make it through lockdown, many families’ resources will be depleted.
“Our [aim] is to help those less fortunate,” the group says.
“I wanted to do something creative but also had a strong urge to want to do something meaningful and help through my skills if i could”
Coffee Colab co-founder, Kelly Rother
