Cake angels whip up sweet birthday surprises for those in need

For many people, a cake and candles are a given when celebrating one’s birthday. Yet, some South African children have never experienced the joy of having their very own birthday cake.

Founded in 2011 by Thabile Thabethe, The Birthday Cake Project, involves volunteers from across South Africa baking cakes for orphans, needy children and the elderly for their birthdays.

The Birthday Cake Project truly takes the cake with their winning recipe of turning the birthdays of those in need into an unforgettable occasion.

Thabethe embarked on the initiative when she was a teenager, teaming up with bakers in different cities to bake cakes for children who have never had a birthday cake or celebration.

At the moment, sweet cake angels, such as Karin Pretorius from Knysna; Norma Greyling from KwaZulu-Natal, and Thabile and Pinky Thabethe from Gauteng, are baking their way into the hearts of many children who have never had a birthday cake.

“Knowing the feeling of love and appreciation that a cake brings, it seemed fitting that The Birthday Cake Project SA would want to give the same joy to orphaned kids,”
