A self-taught Capetonian builder living in a township has stunned people with the incredible interior design of his shack.
Photographer Joshua Rubin met a man named Fernando Mkhabela while he was looking for a builder and what he found inside Mkhabela’s house has amazed social media users.
What looks like an unassuming, informal shack from the outside is a stunning three-bedroomed apartment on the inside.
A shack on the outside, a palace on the inside, Fernando Mkhabela’s three-room shack can easily be mistaken for a luxury hotel in the city centre.https://t.co/RLard2oybh— IOL News (@IOL) December 7, 2019
According to a video posted to social media, Rubin had been in need of a builder when he met Mkhabela, who originally hails from Mozambique. The video takes you on a journey of Mkhabela’s inspiring home in Joe Slovo township.

We went back to his shack on the second floor of a container and when I saw it I was blown away. It has running water, electricity and the architecture is amazing. The best part about it is he did it all himself. We became good friends and I can’t wait to do more work with him!Joshua Rubin
