Tech giant Huawei and Jo’burg radio station 947 are on a mission to get SA’s youth to read more with their programme called Today’s Readers, Tomorrow’s Leaders.
Almost 80% of children in Grade 3 can’t read properly, according to studies, while 65% of Grade 5 pupils can’t add and subtract whole numbers. That’s why Huawei says it’s building a library in Hammanskraal and has partnered with 947 to fill those shelves with books.
The quality of education received in the foundation phase plays a vital role in how a child’s future turns out, Huawei said on its Facebook Page. Their campaign wants to give the gift of reading and help transform today’s readers into tomorrow’s leaders.
“We, together with 947, are on a drive to give children the gift of reading by raising R400,000 for books”, the company said on Facebook.
