Siya Kolisi, South Africa’s legendary double Rugby World Cup-winning captain, is at the forefront of a new initiative aimed at supporting rugby players transitioning from their playing careers to life beyond the game. The Global Rugby Players Foundation, launched recently in London, brings together some of rugby’s biggest names.
The foundation, supported by World Rugby and International Rugby Players, is chaired by former Wallabies captain George Gregan, with Sara Heath appointed as the chief executive officer.
With a focus on empowering former players to lead healthy and fulfilling lives, the foundation is built on the contributions of ten founding members: Siya Kolisi, Dan Carter, Richie McCaw, Johnny Wilkinson, Rachael Burford, Conrad Smith, Kristine Sommer, Census Johnston, Sharni Williams, and Thierry Dusautoir.
Launched on June 1st, the foundation will start with four pilot programmes in Ireland, South Africa, the Pacific Islands, and New Zealand. These will pave the way for broader support services beginning in the autumn, with additional funding rounds in winter 2024.
This initiative is particularly relevant as the rugby community, including those involved in the United Rugby Championship, seeks to provide robust support for its players.
Although still playing himself, Kolisi has experienced the highs of a rugby career and understands the challenges that come with retirement from the sport. The foundation’s mission aligns with Kolisi’s vision of providing holistic support to former players, addressing all aspects of their lives through five main pillars:
The foundation aims to turn post-retirement into a positive challenge, offering former players new opportunities. Kolisi’s involvement is supported by International Rugby Players CEO Omar Hassanein and World Rugby CEO Alan Gilpin, who emphasise the importance of player welfare beyond their careers.
As the Global Rugby Players Foundation begins its work, Kolisi’s role underscores the initiative’s significance for South African rugby and the global rugby community. His involvement ensures that the foundation will make a meaningful impact, helping former players navigate the complexities of life after rugby and achieve lasting well-being.
