East London dad turns dirty sneakers into clever start-up business

Exasperated by your grubby sneakers piling up? An East London dad has just the solution.

Ayabulela Mabinda, 28, is not just a muso but a tekkie cleaner of note, with people queuing up at the rapper’s Southernwood flat for this savvy service, Daily Dispatch reports.

The HR management graduate had been unemployed for two years and found a novel way to help support his two children, which is how the Black Race Sneaker Wash was established.

“I enjoy what I am doing. It does not feel like a job to me at all,” says Mabinda.

The business has grown through word-of-mouth, especially among sneaker-wearing youth, with Mabinda charging R35 for adult and R20 for children’s sizes, and even offering collections and drop-offs.

Each pair is individually washed and dried by hand and Mabinda does about 10 pairs a day, with demand spiking right before the weekend.
