Joburg schools receive much-needed libraries and resource centres

Eight Johannesburg schools have been gifted libraries and resource centres thanks to an ongoing initiative addressing the dire need for such educational aids.

The initiative, a collaboration between Hyundai Automotive SA and the Imperial and Motus Community Trust, handed over its first library to Southview High School in Lenasia in 2013.

The company has since established library and learning centres at Libra Primary School in Lenasia, Heerengracht Primary in Eldorado Park, Motheo Foundation Primary in Lawley, Freedom Primary in Devland, as well as Mid-Ennerdale Primary and Phehello Primary in Sebokeng.

This week, Lindisa Primary in Evaton, south of Johannesburg, was gifted a centre.

Principal Lawrence Ngcobo took delivery of the new library and resource centre on behalf of the school.

Two librarians are part of the sponsored library and resource centre, which contains scores of books ranging from encyclopedias to fiction, computers and a “clever whiteboard” for the school which has about 1,200 pupils.

It cost R1.5-million to refurbish a classroom at Lindisa and convert it to a library with tables, chairs, bookshelves and a big-screen whiteboard – and fill its shelves with about 4,500 new books.

The Imperial and Motus Community Trust will supply two librarians for six months, after which one librarian will continue to assist pupils.
