Motivated to reduce food wastage, they quit their jobs and began a sorbet business which they ran from a stall. This month they celebrate the launch of their new store at Victoria Yards in Joburg.
Sobae will be hosting a comedy evening to mark the launch of the store on February 7.
The new premises are a milestone for the couple, but their journey to get to this point has not been an easy one.
“It took almost three years of trading outside as a vendor. As a new brand, we had to be committed and consistent with our working hours” (the stall was outdoors at a venue that operated from 12-4PM) on weekdays)

Thanks to their new premises, Sobae will be able to prepare their sorbets from start to finish in one spot and their customers won’t be exposed to the elements.
Since the completion of the store the couple’s roles have changed: “We’re more focused on production, packaging and innovation now.”
They have two employees who originally helped them trade at markets, the stall and private events.
“Christinah Ngoy and Thuthuka Myeza both started while we had the stall, trading at markets and private events. Now that we’ve moved into the store they focus on sales, communication and managing the store,” Thula says.
“There are a lot of exciting things we have planned and envisioned for Sobae.”
“Growing in Victoria Yards, introducing more authentic flavours, employing people in the community, changing our packaging and having a store in Cape Town are part of our future plans.”
