Boerework making can take years to perfect but an 18-year old student from Wellington in the Western Cape has aced it.
Delano Jasper has won the 28th annual Championship Boerewors competition and his winning boerewors will be available in all Shoprite and Checkers stores throughout the country from Friday September 11.
“It’s the first time I entered this competition, so I really had no expectations, but we had a family challenge to make the finals this year,” Jasper says.
Besides the esteemed title of 2020 Championship Boerewors winner, not to mention the ultimate boerewors bragging rights, Jasper also won a new Toyota Fortuner.
Second and third place were claimed by Paul Jordaan from Bloemfontein and John Marais from Vredendal respectively.
Boerewors making is a family passion as Jasper’s mom, Yvonne Blaauw, won the Championship Boerewors competition in 2018.
Because of Covid-19 this year’s competition finale was largely a virtual affair. The top 10 finalists joined remotely to oversee the braaiing of their boerewors by chefs Kevin Gibbs and Dion Vengatass, a member of the SA National Culinary Team, and an independent judging panel from the SA Chefs Association once again took charge of the judging process.
